June Outing – Googong Foreshores (Southern End)
29 June @ 10:00 am - 1:00 pm
Explore the limestone country at the southern end of Googong Foreshores!
Over 165 bird species have been recorded at Googong, so who knows what might turn up?
Date: Sunday, 29th June
Time: 10 am
Meeting place: London Bridge Arch carpark (see map below). This is adjacent to the London Bridge woolshed.
Directions: From Queanbeyan head south along the Old Cooma Road. Turn left on to Burra Road, then turn left again on to London Bridge Road. Near the fence to Googong Forshores, the road forks. Take the right fork along the gravel road into the reserve. It is approx 40 minutes drive from Canberra, so car pooling would be a good option. Please indicate in the RSVP comments if you would like a lift, or can give a lift.
Walking Track: 3-4 km, undulating fire trail with some hill sections.
We will walk a loop track for 2-3 hours approx, in the vicinity of Burra Creek. We’ll pass through old-growth woodland to London Bridge Arch, a limestone cave through which the creek flows, then back via a historical homestead through the edge of some dry forest and open grassland.
After returning, we’ll drive to the nearby Tin Hut Dam, where there is a bird hide.
Bring: binoculars, warm clothes and snacks if you’d like morning tea at the arch. Also if you’d like to stay for lunch, bring a packed lunch that we could have at either the London Bridge woolshed or at Tin Hut dam. There are toilets at both the woolshed and Tin Hut dam.
