September Monthly Meeting – Speaker: Ben Keaney “Why conserve high-country bogs?… For peats sake!”

4 September @ 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm

What are bogs? Why are they important? What threats do they have? What will they be like in the future? Do we need to rethink how we manage bogs? And if so, how?

Dr. Ben Keaney will discuss the importance of Bogs and Fens in the High Country landscape.

Dr Ben Keaney is a researcher at the ANU. As a palaeo-ecologist he has studied the long-term vegetation changes in different peatlands through-out the Australian Alps for more than two decades. He also worked as a consultant in both Kosciuszko and Namadgi National Parks following the 2020 fires and is the executive director of GeoArchaeology Peatland Consultants. In in his spare time he loves to wander through mires, and coach wrestling.

Ben’s talk will be held in the Slatyer Seminar Room, on the first floor of the R N Robertson Building, 46 Sullivans Creek Road at the ANU. Head up the stepped ramp on the right as you enter the building. Lifts are also available. The Slatyer room will be on your left at the front of the building.

Refreshments available from 7pm. Mugs or keep-cups encouraged. Non-members welcomed.

Meeting starts at 7:30pm.
